Where's the 3D in Google Maps?

I'm missing something obvious, but how do you get that cool 3D view in Google Maps? I see everyone talking about it, but my map stubbornly stays stuck. Is this a setting I'm overlooking, or is 3D Maps a secret handshake kind of thing?

On the navigation screen, there's a tiny compass icon in the top corner. Give it a tap, and it'll unlock the menu to change how your map looks. You can now choose the 3D view there.

To switch to 3D view in Google Maps, you can try tapping the small compass icon in the top corner if you're using a built-in map screen. It should cycle through different views. If that doesn't work, check your settings to make sure 3D is enabled.
